GoodBye!!! =)
Goodbye Fellow students and Dr. Strange!! It was a pleasure being around you in this class and getting to know everyone! I Know I will be seeing you around!! =)
My EDM310 Summary! =)
blogs- the blogs have helped me keep up with my work in edm310 and also being able to see other people's blogs from around the world.
wikis- I believe that wikis are a way to have a website or being able to edit a website.
presentations- The presentations that we had to do helped each of us with our public speaking.
Google Docs-- This is a way to save your work online, which by the way is a genius invention!! How cool is it that you can pull your work up online ANYWHERE you are. It is very convenient!! I will definitly keep using google docs when I become a teacher.
Google spreadsheets- Anytime you need to keep track with data or polls this is a great way! Its also available anywhere that you can pull up the internet.
Picasa- This is a great and neat way to edit and resize your photos. provided by google.
podcasts- A podcast is a series of digital media files (either audio or video) that are released and downloaded through web. The class had an assignment to do a podcast and my partners and I made a video of Randy Pauchs last speech. Which is provided below in a previous post.
videocasts- The term is used to distinguish between podcasts which most commonly contain audio files and those referring to the distribution of video where the RSS feed is used as a non-linear TV channel to which consumers can subscribe using a PC, TV, set-top box, media center or mobile multimedia device.
YouTube- I use Youtube just about everyday. It is so educational and also very entertaining. You can find just about anything on the website! From Songs to movie trailors, even educational speeches. I will keep using Youtube throughout my teaching years!!
Twitter, I just started getting into twitter recently. But I dont use it for educcational purposes yet, I mainly use it to check up on celebrities. =) I know in the future it will be more easier to use and more entertaining, because im thinking I can post up on my website what I have planned for the kids that day. Then that way the childrens parents can get on and check it out! =) sound like a good idea???
other teachers and students outside of our region-I think this is one of my favorite things that I've done in EDM310. It was a very educational experience getting to see other students around the world and letting them see ours!!
comments4kids- Having to comment on other students work from across the world was really neat. They do not even know me but yet I am commenting on their work. And i get to see what the other students are writing about. I Loved it. If I am able to have some sort of connection with computers I would definitly try to keep this going and let my students do the same thing.
iTunes and iTunesU- iTunes is a way to download music for a small fee, but not only can you downloadm music but you can get the whole album. Books are also available! Podcasts and Videocast are available as well. iTunes U is a way to dowload lectures from college professors. So in case you miss your lecture for the day just get online and download it! This option is not available for all universities yet. But im sure it wont be long before it is everywhere!!!
Google forms- This task allows you to create a poll or quiz. Its very easy to make! I know I will keep using Google Forms throughout my teaching experience. It's to easy not to!! =)
data bases- This allows you to keep track with data!
Google Earth- A Map literally of EARTH and whereever you want to go. It's really COOL!! I know my little 1st graders would find this interesting!! =)
Delicious Delicious Bookmarks is the official Firefox add-on for Delicious, the world's leading social bookmarking service (formerly del.icio.us). It integrates your bookmarks and tags with Firefox and keeps them in sync for easy, convenient access.
ACCESS- The State of Alabama will provide equal access to high quality instruction to improve student achievement through distance learning.
Foliotek- foloteck is extremely comfusing, and Im not really sure what exactly it is. I know that we have to upload all of our work to it because of our EDUCATION major.
technological literacy- I think it is important to be good with technology if teaching is in your future because we are going to be teaching the future!!! We need to be able to teach them so that they can know about technology as well. The world is only getting more advanced. =)
the future of schools- The future of our schools is one word...TECHNOLOGY!! We may not even have to go to school one day, we will just have to log on to the internet, and that will be it! School will be online! But if not then I know there will definitly be smartboards In every school room, and maybe there will even be a requirement to have an iphone!! =)
**** This class has excited me a few times, I mean realisticly college classes do not excite me!! HOWEVER, Talking with Kaia's father was really EXCITING!!
****Intellectually challenging was Everything in this class in my opinion. This class really stressed me out at times. Just because I had to actually go figure out through videos how to put links or pictures on my page. I actually had to figure it out. =( STRESSFUL at times. But I made it!
****I can honestly say that I never had a problem going to this class because I never got bored there was always something to catch up on.
****I can't really think of anything to change in this class. Your doing a great Job Dr. Strange. =D
****I think that I am pretty good with technology. I am definitly not the best, and I for sure need to learn more. But I feel I am good enough to handle a task that I am given!
****to keep learning about technology I will probably keep up with Dr. Strange and his blogs and also do my own research!

Project 11
PARTNER: Dara Mcdowell.
My Topic was Outstanding teachers with technology. So for this project I made a video using Windows MOVIE MAKER.... and I am still trying to get it on youtube so that i can post it to my blog. But for now i will tell about it. I downloaded the Michael Jackson song "Easy as 1,2,3." for the background music. While the music plays several flasehes of pictures, cartoons, and even a wordle comes up. It shows the different types of technology there is and also several eduactional quotes. It was a fun project to work on!
NEW CLASSROOM RULES
7. Use polite speech when speaking, blogging, texting, Twittering, instant messaging, etc.
Millions of people all around the world will be able to read what you post, so be polite. This could affect your future. Your future boss could get online and see some unappropriate things that could affect your position.
14. If you need help raise your hand, but don’t wait for the teacher get help from your neighbors and post your question to your online Personal Learning Network.
I agree because most of the time, when it takes 10 mins to get help from your professor it may take 2 seconds for your neighbor to help! Usually someone around you will know whats going on if you dont. MOST OF THE TIME!! CLICK HERE
Brilliant things teachers do with technology
6. Use the kids’ own devices to teach them. Brilliant teachers understand the old Arab proverb, "It's easier to steer the camel in the direction it is already heading." Students are increasingly and unstoppably bringing in personal communication devices -- cell phones, cameras, game devices, iPods/mp3 players, netbooks, laptops, and PDAs. Brilliant teachers know how to use cell phones to poll their classes; create podcasts of lectures for later review; use games to teach difficult concepts; and make "Google-jockeys" of student wireless laptop users.
Its a good idea to make the kids feel like their technology is important and fun. Such as their ipods or cell phones. Making sure us as teachers also know how to use the new cell phones with new technology is a great idea!! I like how we could do polls through text message, teachers would probably have more participation since it is happening through students and their cell phones.
7. Delight in the discovery, the newness, and the fun technology holds. It's not about technology; it's about finding out and doing "cool" things. We knew that ourselves as kids. Brilliant tech-using teachers have never lost the thrill of doing something new and interesting with these electronic Tinker Toys. They are pleased with their tech-using students and pleased with themselves. Brilliant teachers use technology's engagement (not entertainment) power. Technology is not "just one more thing," it’st a vital experience that brings discovery, excitement, and even fun to the classroom.
Make learning fun!! =) This is great!

Stupid mistakes teachers make with technology
2. Treating a school computer like a home computer. Teachers who use a school computer to run a business, edit their kid's wedding videos, or send tasteless jokes to half of North America (including that fundamentalist math teacher down the hall) are being stupid. Teachers who take their computers home and let their kids hack on them are being stupid. Teachers who don't own a personal computer for personal business deserve to get into well-deserved trouble.
I believe that this is a very bad idea. Especially when teachers let their kids use their personal computers because first hand I learned that downloading music will crash mommys computer!! =(
3. Not supervising computer-using students. It is really stupid to believe Internet filters will keep kids out of trouble on the Internet. If they choose to do so, even the slow kids who can't get around the school's filter, can still exploit that 10 percent of porn sites the filter won't catch. They can still send cyberbullying e-mail -- maybe even using your e-mail address. Or they can just plain waste time
I agree students should be supervised while on computer, because chat rooms are filled with vulgar material. Even at schools i remember that there are certain codes you can type in to get pass the "Blocked" sites.

At the Teachers Desk
"The Fundred Project is a art project that focuses on bringing awareness to lead-contaminated soil in major U.S. cities and contributes. These valuable drawings will be picked up by a special armored truck and presented to the U.S. Congress with a request for an even exchange of the creative capital–your Fundreds–for real funding to make safe lead-polluted soils in New Orleans." Students from around the country will be designing Fundred dollar bills in an effort to raise awareness.
I think this is a great and neat experience for the children. My neice alyssa is in 5th grade and said that her school does this. She says "the children think it is a fun and great history project."CLICK HERE
LANDSLIDE
I Think it is very important for kids to post their work online that way they can share with other kids around the world what they are doing. That is very neat and is a great experience if you really think about. We can see other cultures through posting our work online. Other countries can see what we are doing as well. This video was so inspiring to watch! I really enjoyed watching the kids sing together and to be so involved. Its very out of the ordinary to see every kid actually paying attention and being involved in something espcially a song! I think it is good for kids to post their things so that they can go back and see what they have done as well. One example of posting work is when we did the assignment with Kaia. All of the wonderful activities her and her father did were posted online for the world to see. That was very interesting for me to see because I got to see how a young child from across the world was being educated. Its a very neat and educational experience. Another example which was not introduced through this class is facebook. Its another way to show how people are interacting throughout the world and its a great way to keep in touch. One other example we did in this class that I have really enjoyed was the project we were assigned to tell about anything... and most of the class told about themself. Which I really enjoyed because I got to see a little bit about everyone that was in my class, and learn about their family or what they enjoy! Then of course we were assigned to post that to our blog for everyone in the world to see! =) CLICK HERE

Comment 4 kids
The student I had was Owen. His story was titled MONKEY MONKEY MONKEY!!! He explained that Dec 10th was monkey day, because one morning long ago on Dec 10th a boy woke up with a cripled back and all the kids picked on him, and started walking like him...a monkey!! so therefore Dec 10 is walk like a monkey day!! I had a student that was really interested in the trombone. The student listed several facts about the trombone, such as Beethoven was the first to include the trombone into a syphonic orchestra. CLICK HERE

I had Keiana, a 1st grade student in Mrs.Cassidy's class! She demonstrated 4 ways to make 8. I must say she is a very bright student. =)CLICK HERE

The Vision: The State of Alabama will provide equal access to high quality instruction to improve student achievement through distance learning.
GOAL: The goal of the distance learning plan is to create equity through additional educational offerings for all Alabama public high school students.
MISSION: The mission of the distance education program in Alabama is to provide an infrastructure that delivers equitable, quality learning opportunities for all citizens.
This website is very helpful. It provides access to course catalogs, test preps, advancement placement, and also a look at the Graduation Exam. Also provides many resources such as the Alabama Virtual Library.CLICK HERE
ALEX:
This website is very beneficial, and also easy to understand. I was on for a few minutes and already knew what to do and where to go on the site! This is a website that provides different activities for courses and Lesson plans. Also it provides other web links, personal work space, and an option for a search. I will definitly keep this website in mind when i begin teaching.CLICK HERE
Dear Kaia:
I was very impressed by these documents. Its a moving story that is gonna effect our learning and technology in the future! Kaia had some wonderful pictures, and it was so cute hearing her talk about them. I also liked the voicethread that the class sent Kaia's father. Im sure the voicethread was alot easier for Kaia to understand then a regular comment! These new technologies are very important to grasp now i feel, because its only going to get more and more advanced.CLICK HERE

Networked Student: Ms. Drexler
I think this is such an interesting video. Its very true, there are so many other ways a student can learn rather than from a teacher or a textbook. In this video we see that students can network, by getting online talking with other students, looking up the subject and checking out blogs on the subject. Also if the student has an ipod you can listen to lectures from Berkely!!! Thats crazy..and its a very creative way to learn!! However i still believe in teachers, there is other things that teachers teach you rather than a subject, they also teach you discipline and responsibility. Soo we always will need teachers. =) OF COURSE! Ms. Drexler has created a great project that students will enjoy. I sure did. CLICK HERE
Richard Miller: This is how we dream
I agree with Mr. MIller, his videos are full of interesting information. Our students will have more knowledge of technology than we did at their age. Everyone has a computer these days, Computers are used as an everyday resource. It still shocks me that my sister knows more about technology than i do, and she is in 7th grade.CLICK HERE

ipods: Duke
To encourage creative uses of technology in education and campus life duke distributed 20 GB Apple ipod devises each equipped with voice recorders to over 1600 first year students in 2004. At least 15 fall courses with a total enrollment of 628 unique students and estimated 33 spring courses with a total enrollment of over 600 students incorporated ipod usage. However classes like art and music ipods were prohibited. The academic uses of ipod decices by Duke fell into 5 major categories: Course content dissemination tool, Classroom recording tool, Field recording tool, study support tool, file storage and transfer. HOwever even though the ipods had a positive influence, there were also some negatives. Students seem to be very distracted with the ipods and were not paying attention to the professor.

iTunesU

iTunes University, a website with downloadable educational podcasts, can provide students the opportunity to obtain professors’ lectures when students are unable to attend class. I think this is very Helpful!! I have never used itunes University myself but sounds like a GREAT idea. however this is the first I have even heard about it. So Im not sure if the University of South Alabama even has this as an option. I think mostly this university's rules are to BE IN CLASS! MANDATORY ATTENDANCE. =( but I know that one day itunes University will be more of an open option for college students. I have read that Students that use itunes U have had higher test scores, because they can listen and take notes, but also they can listen again!

Dr. Christie: Educational Technology

EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY....This section of Dr. Alice Christie's site would be most useful for me. I say this because this section has the most information period, it seems. She has listed several different approaches for me to use. Such as: Digital Media and photography, electronic portfolios, educational portals, internet tools and safety, podcasting, and Rubrics. There is so many different sources to look at! She seems to be a very smart woman and I appreciate this site. I also like the photography site. I think photography is very important because thats an easier way for kids to learn...through pictures. And how fun would that be to take pictures in class. She has alot of information on photography, and also alot of beautiful pictures.

"What I've Learned This Year" by Mr. McClung
Mr.McClung shared some very interesting thoughts, that are very helpful and inspiring to me! One thought he shared was that we should communicate. If there is ever any drama or confusion going on, then you should stop and talk about it. Another thought was to never stop learning even as a teacher. We owe it to the children to keep learning and to keep gaining knowledge to help the children learn more. Also Be REASONABLE dont set the standards so high that the children never reach them, Understand the level they are on and help to extend their knowledge by making small goals that are reachable.
See who's editing Wikipedia
Props to This Cal Tech graduate student, Virgil Griffith. He has created something very useful. Its about time someone has figured out how to trace the false statements and scandals placed on the website. This Wikipedia Scanner offers users a searchable database that ties millions of anonymous Wikipedia edits to organizations where those edits apparently originated, by cross-referencing the edits with data on who owns the associated block of internet IP addresses.

Did You know 4.0?
These are Some Very interesting Facts!!
1,000,000 books are published worldwide every year.
A google book Search scanner can digitize over 1,000 pages every hour.
I Had no idea that the newspaper ratings were down, but that now more people are reading the newspaper online!! wow! thats crazy!
HOW many text messages does the average American teenager send each month?? 2272!! wow! Well i guess thats very true because i sure send alot!!
Nokia manufactures 13 phones per second!!
In Feb 2008 John Mccain raised 11 million for his US presidential bid.
That same month Barrack Obama attended no campaign fundraisers.
Instead Obama raised 55 million online in those 29 days!!! WOW!
I really enjoyed watching all of these interesting facts. I think it is very historical and good for people to think about!! In a few years there is no telling what "Did you know 10.0" will say... =)

Randy Pausch's Last Lecture
I am very glad I was assigned to watch the Last Lecture. It has inspired me to not take my life for granted. Randy Puasch has some very inspiring quotes and he has accomplished some very exciting life goals. =)
Have something to bring to the table, because that will make you more welcome.- Randy Pausch
this quote is soo true and inspiring. It always makes you feel better to bring something when people are eating a dinner, because you feel like you have helped out in a way. Instead of feeling like you dont deserve to eat because you didnt bring anything.
We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand- Randy Pausch
In life we may have lost a parent, divorced parents or some may even be orphans. We cannot change what comes our way or who we will meet, but the person you are will come out through the way that you live your life and we have the responsibility of living our life no matter what is thrown our way! =)
I have a theory that people who come from large families are better people because they’ve just had to learn to get along. - Randy Pausch
I know this first hand and i agree with Mr. Pausch. Larger Families have to get along because there is more kis than usual around all the time. If you dont get along it would probably be a LOUD crazy house!!! They also learn how to share alot easier than a family with one child.

Comment for Kids week 3
I Commented on Brandons story, it was titled "2nd day to Long Island" He told me about his trip to a water park. It is a very exciting story! He made the story very descriptive. I felt as if i was riding down the slides with him. Also he went through terrible storms that day. He made it seem very realistic!

Is it okay to be a technologically Illiterate Teacher?
to answer the question, i think it is okay to an extent..... For example my mother has no CLUE how to do anytihng online....such as check grades =) that was a plus for me at one time! but that really isnt such a good thing for her! i think everyone should at least grasp the concept of all this new technology. However Teachers.... There is alot of great information on the web and also new technology tools, such as smart boards that are very helpful! i Do think teachers should be in touch with the new technology!
It's not about the technology
She expresses a good point when stating her first point being: Teachers must be learners. Because everyone of us students are going to learn so many things and different ways through our own experiences. Also i agree that not all students will be fast learners and may not get the concepts, but we must never give up.... always have that GOAL! =)
A Vision of Students Today
This movie was very interesting, and entertaining! Its really neat how this movie did capture some of my college experience. Its a true document of college Life! facebook during class, and more email pages used then class assignment pages. That laptop must have been really expensive, because the video states that someone in the US makes less in a Year then what the laptop is worth! Thats insane!! I really enjoyed how the sentences were all spread out on different things! That made this video entertaining!
To Add to this Video, i would maybe go into different classrooms as well. AND Also maybe getting the teachers to actually hold a few signs. To See what their Views and Opinions are on things!

What I have learned...
After Watching/listening to these presentations....I have learned to speak more clear throughout my presentation. AND to also Speak Loud!!! I have a feeling there is alot to these podcast....so taking your time and being prepared is vital. You dont want to rush on these things. Plan out what you may say! Be creative With sounds. I think that is really neat how you can involve other things such a music to make it more exciting. =) I can use my podcast to give important informati0n out as well!
Last years podcast
I was impressed! There were not many things that I saw, that I could improve. So that makes this a more difficult assignment to blog on. But Maybe more eye contact, if that is even allowed. Im not sure, they could have been prompted to look a certain way.
Also Possibly talking a little more louder and clearer. You never know who will be listening, and they may need you to talk very clear. Especially since it is being recorded, its not always that clear.

Video in the classroom Intro.
I really enjoy Mr. Needleman's approach to reading. This idea is very creative. I can see why it is successful. I'm very interested in listening to what he has to say in class. Hopefully it will be very helpful to me in the future!! =)
PODCASTS
I think that Podcasts are very interesting, and I'm glad that I am getting the oppurtunity to learn about all the new technology out there. I thought I was pretty good at the technology and knew alot about it, but there are several more things to learn. Their are good sides to the podcasts, but there were also some dislikes as well.
I like how podcast are free!!! =) They are also very easy to find on itunes. There was no stress trying to locate the right ones or anything like that. Also the podcast are educational. It helps also to have fun, upbeat people doing the show, like Ben and Joan. They were very enthusiastic about their podcast! The Music is exciting and gets you involved.
However the down side was that i feel they talk wayyy to much, about other uninteresting things. If I want to listen to a podcast and learn about a smartboard, I would like for them to get strainght to the point. I hope that doesnt sound rude. Even though some of the "chatter" was humerous and entertaining, it was just TOO much talk in my opinion.
Also the music on some of the podcast was to loud and i could hardly hear the laady talking. =(
But through this exercise I have become more familiar with podcasting and also with itunes. I now feel more confident with my next assignment. Hopefully my next assignment can turn out to be just as good as one that I have heard.

Vicki Davis: Harness Your Students' Digital Smarts
I like this video, but there were a few parts where I disagree. I think it is good for children to learn how to communicate online, and how to work with certain blogs and web pages. But I also think that children are now days to much on the computer with Video Games/Myspace/chat rooms.... and is that a good thing?
I think that Vicki Davis has a good thing going. I felt, just from watching the video, that she was making a difference in their little rural town of Georgia. The students were actually teaching the other students. Also having them look up words they dont understand on google, rather than her just explaining the definition is a way to have them be more responsible. =) Another thing i liked from the video, was the class traveling to the middle east for a conference. That is something the students will never forget.

Sir Ken Robinson: The Importance of Creativity
I really enjoyed this LONGGGGG video. =) Ken Robinson is a very talented man. He also has alot of humorous stories to tell to help prove his point. I really like the story where the teacher asked the little 7 year old girl what she was drawing, and she said "God". The teacher replied, "Well no one knows what god looks like." and the little girl responds, "They will in a minute." =) that is so cute. I agree with him on almost everything he said. There are alot of people that think they have ADHD, and probably do..... but there are other ways we can cure our abnomalities other than Medication all the time!! Just Dance!
Did You Know?/Mr.Winkle Wakes
Well I will be honest, I put this off until the last minute because I was afraid the videos were going to be boring. But this Video was very interesting. My little sister (12 years old) even liked it. The information was very interesting. I think its crazy that so many people have a MYSPACE. I mean if myspace were a country it would be the 5th largest! That is alot of people!! I was shocked that the number of text messages sent and received everyday, exceeds the total population of the planet. Its crazy that the information students learn will be outdated within the next three years of learning it. What is the point?
Technology is growing tremendously. We have computers/Robots helping out and performing during surgeries now. I wonder what will be next? By 2013 a supercomputer will be built that exceeds the computational capabilities of the human brain. I really enjoyed knowing the things that were taking place throughout the world during the video, such as the births in the U.S., China and India. And also how 694,000 songs were being download illegaly. I enjoyed this video. =)
I enjoyed Mr. Winkle Wakes as well. Its true, technology is growing SOOO fast!! As i mentioned above we have robots performing surgeries now. Its really neat how people are able to communicate now through computers and actually looking at each other. Technology has made this life alot of fun, but in a way im concerned with how far the technology is gonna go. I mean what will they create next?? It's kinda scary in a way. I don't want a robot as a doctor. However i do think that the technology we have now can help us cure more sicknesses. But as many things change it is true that school has remained the same, even though we have smart boards in our classrooms. =) haha...Its still the same ol' "teacher-to-student" lectures most of the time.
