ipods: Duke

To encourage creative uses of technology in education and campus life duke distributed 20 GB Apple ipod devises each equipped with voice recorders to over 1600 first year students in 2004. At least 15 fall courses with a total enrollment of 628 unique students and estimated 33 spring courses with a total enrollment of over 600 students incorporated ipod usage. However classes like art and music ipods were prohibited. The academic uses of ipod decices by Duke fell into 5 major categories: Course content dissemination tool, Classroom recording tool, Field recording tool, study support tool, file storage and transfer. HOwever even though the ipods had a positive influence, there were also some negatives. Students seem to be very distracted with the ipods and were not paying attention to the professor.

  1. EDM 310 students say attention span 5-10 minutes in class. So not surprising not paying attention to professor. Also may have been dull, repeating information, etc. And then it might have been Facebook calling. Hard to tell.
